











New Oriente – Las Brisas (Guatemala)
The New Oriente region, one of Guatemala’s youngest coffee-growing areas, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decades. Once dominated by small producers who treated coffee as a secondary crop, the region has evolved thanks to investments in infrastructure and the professionalization of farming practices. Today, farms like Las Brisas continue this tradition in a modern and sustainable way.
Marvin Carias purchased his first plot of land in 1990 and has since steadily expanded his farm, integrating modern and sustainable agricultural practices. He introduced balanced shade systems, replanted aging coffee trees, and modernized the wet mill, which now processes both his own harvest and coffee cherries from surrounding smallholders.
The coffee is washed processed, involving a controlled fermentation of around 12 hours, followed by careful washing and natural patio drying. This process enhances the coffee’s clarity and natural sweetness, creating a balanced and clean cup profile.
A remarkable aspect of Marvin’s work is his commitment to the environment. His wastewater treatment system includes eight successive filtration ponds, through which the water cycles completely before being reused in production. This approach minimizes environmental impact and optimizes resource use.
Beyond producing exceptional coffee, Marvin is also a key driver of local community development. He purchases cherries from small farmers, offering them a stable market and supporting the regional economy. Through his collaboration with Primavera Coffee, a cooperative with a strong social impact, Marvin helps connect local producers with international markets.
The results of his dedication are visible in the daily life of the community: better roads, improved access to healthcare and education, and renewed hope for the younger generation.
